What NAR Level 2 High Power Rocketry certification means.
NAR Level 2 is a prerequisite-gated adult rocketry credential that combines technical and regulatory knowledge with an in-person, witnessed high-power flight. Eric earned it with a J-class certification flight that reached 5,000 ft.

Why Level 2 is a meaningful technical milestone.

Eligibility and Level 1 first
NAR's current procedures require a Level 2 candidate to be at least 18, be a member in good standing, and already hold a current Level 1 certification before beginning the Level 2 process.

A written knowledge gate
The current online exam contains 40 questions covering regulations, motor designations, range and safety practice, and rocket stability. Passing requires at least 35 correct answers.

A personally built J/K/L rocket
The candidate must build the certification rocket and demonstrate the ability to fly a model containing at least one J-, K-, or L-class motor.

Witnessed flight and safe recovery
Qualified NAR certification personnel must inspect the rocket, witness the flight in person, and inspect it after a stable flight, successful deployment, and safe recovery.
What it demonstrates
Knowledge has to survive contact with a real flight.
Level 2 matters because it is not earned through study alone. The candidate has to connect stability, construction, motor selection, range procedure, recovery design, and post-flight inspection in a single accountable process. Completing that pathway while still in high school is especially notable because the current program begins at age 18.
How we describe its rarity responsibly
NAR does not publish enough public demographic data for us to claim that Eric is in a specific top percentage, is the youngest, or is one of only a stated number of holders. The defensible distinction is the credential's strict prerequisite, exam, build, witnessed-flight, and recovery requirements—and the fact that Eric completed them during high school.
